Hong Kong 2019
Hong Kong · 12 August 2019
I flew into Hong Kong in August 2019, at the height of the protests against Beijing's tightening grip, and stayed for the weeks that followed. These six frames are what came back: the riot lines at night, the metro station after a clearance, a van with its doors open, the faces under the helmets when the gas had cleared enough to see them.
It was the hardest place I have ever worked. I was shot with rubber rounds, pepper sprayed, and one night the tear gas took me down completely, blind on the road with the camera in my lap until it passed. That story is told in full on the Policing page, where these frames also sit. This album is simply the Hong Kong set on its own.
